CAR2GO PARTNERS WITH LIVESTRONG

INSIDE AND AROUND CAR2GO

CITIZENS OF ULM

Should you ever go to Austin, Texas then rest assured that you'll find a piece of Ulm there. But then we're not telling you anything new. The fact that car2go can also be found in the capital of Texas has been known since November 2009, when the Ulm concept was introduced on the Colorado River in a pilot phase. But now - and that's the news - we're shifting up a gear.

You should make hay while the sun shines: In Ulm as in Austin! On May 21, there will be a pretty wild party at Republic Square Park, where car2go will be hosting and celebrating the rollout of modern mobility.

It was a short and straight route in November 2009, when car2go opened its first international office and Austin – with some 800,000 inhabitants – was the ideal location in North America.  The fourth largest city in Texas is seen as a liberal stronghold in what is otherwise said to be a pretty conservative state; it has one of the largest and best public universities of the nation and likes the slogan “Keep Austin Weird”. Let's be unusual, modern and different. The words of erstwhile Mayor Will Wynn: “Austin is really different”, sum up the situation perfectly.

In Austin, too, everything was first tried, tested and checked out. Together with the City and its so-called Beta-Group – city employees and a few pilot users – the practicalities of car2go were checked out in a large American city. The data that was collected over the last months make it clear that “we can more than adequately  fulfil the needs and wishes of our customers in Austin”, says Nicholas Cole, President and CEO of car2go North America. “We are in the position of providing everybody here with the progressive and unique solution that car2go represents”, adds Cole.

Austinites have been able to register online since April 21 - and they will be able to collect their membership card at the party in the Republic Square Park. This celebration promises to be a good one - and why? Because, as the locals proudly, say: “Everything is bigger in Texas!”.

CAR2GO'S OPERATING AREA

Several members have contacted us with questions regarding the car2go operating area. To better clarify the scope of car2go's current operating area, we would like to provide this brief explanation of car2go's approved "geo-fence."

For the current pilot phase car2go has implemented a restricted geo-fence around the city of Austin. This was established to ensure that car2go vehicles do not end up in certain areas of Austin or cities where we cannot easily retrieve them. Boundaries of the geo- fence: Enlarge image on the right.

After starting a car2go rental, feel free to drive the vehicle outside of the geo-fence area if needed, but the rental cannot be terminated until the car2go vehicle is returned to a non-restricted city on-street parking space.

If you are outside of the geo-fence area, a message will appear in the vehicle: "YOU ARE OUTSIDE THE AREA OF OPERATION AND THE RENTAL CANNOT BE COMPLETED." If you see this message you are free to continue using the car2go vehicle for your purposes, but must return within the geo-fence area in order to end the rental.

Please note that there are a few exceptions to the geo-fence operating area. Some City of Austin departments that have offices outside of the geo-fence area have approved "satellite" operating locations. Employees that work for these city departments may terminate their car2go rentals at those satellite locations. To find out if your department qualifies, please contact: car2go@ci.austin.tx.us

STARTING AND FINISHING A CAR2GO RENTAL

As we navigate through the Austin pilot phase together we ask you to share your opinions on car2go and send your comments to us at austin@car2go.com. Since starting the pilot, several members have contacted us with questions regarding the car2go rental process. To assist with the process, we decided to publish some helpful tips and photos in the media gallery

Step 1: Locate a car2go
The concept behind car2go is simple. car2go vehicles are available on-demand, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can locate the closest car2go by using the online locator map [Link] on the car2go Web site, using one of our smart phone applications or calling the car2go customer service center. You can rent an available car2go on street or reserve a car2go up to 24 hours in advance on our car2go Web site.

Step 2: Start your Rental.
Once you have located a car2go vehicle, whether on the street or by reservation, simply hold your membership card to the reader on the windshield [see photo 1]. Wait a few moments while your member card is recognized. The doors will then unlock.  Once inside, input your four digit pin [see photo 2] and confirm with “OK”.

Step 3: Inspect the Vehicle.
Before driving off, please inspect the interior and exterior of the vehicle. If you notice any visible damage or maintenance issues [see photo 3], you can report the damage to car2go by answering “report damage” to the question, “Does the vehicle have any visible damage?” You will be connected to the service-team via a hands-free unit so you can report the damage. Lastly accept the terms and conditions.

Step 4: Drive Off.
Drive Off. The ignition key [see photo 4] is located in the key fob holder inside the glove compartment. Start the vehicle by inserting the key into the ignition located near the gearshift between the seats.

Step 5: Finish your Rental.
Once you have reached your final destination, simply leave the car2go in a nearby car2go parking spot or at any nonrestricted city-controlled on street parking in the downtown business area. Make sure that the key fob is placed back in the holder inside the glove compartment. Reminder: Please do not leave the key loose in the glove compartment. The rental can only be finished by sliding the round key fob back into the holder slot [see photo 5]. When the key is placed back correctly, the touchscreen will show the last question, “Have you experienced any problems with your rental?”  Answer Yes or No. When you exit the vehicle place your Member Card against the reader on the windshield.  A message will appear thanking you for your rental [see photo 5].  At this time the doors will lock and the indicator light will change from red to green, completing your car2go rental.

As members of the first North American pilot, we value your feedback. We launched this pilot to gain practical experience to ensure that car2go exceeds our members’ expectations. Please feel free to share your opinions on car2go and send your comments to austin@car2go.com.

INSIDE CAR2GO

THE CAR2GO PRINCIPLE

car2go was successfully launched in Ulm, Germany at the end of March 2009. This fall, car2go will embark on its biggest trip ever when Daimler AG sends the pilot project to Austin, Texas. The goal of the pilot project is to gather practical experience toward an international launch.
The car2go principle is simple, yet brilliant: whenever you need a car in Ulm, one of 200 car2go is ready and waiting for you. And the best part? You determine where you want to go and for how long you want to use your car2go – all without a reservation or specifying a destination.

When you’ve reached your destination, simply park the car, making sure you’re not in a no parking/waiting zone or metered parking space. You can also park the car in a parkspot, specially-marked car2go parking spots that have been rented and designated particularly within the downtown area.

And with car2go, refueling is as much of a non-issue as cleaning the vehicle – both are included in the low rental price of only 19 cents per minute. The rate also includes all additional costs such as insurance and maintenance, meaning you stay flexible and can enjoy a new, groundbreaking form of downtown mobility that involves neither fixed costs nor a security deposit. Welcome to car2go!

AROUND CAR2GO

CAN'T WAIT FOR CAR2GO TO COME!

Karalyn West is working as a model and an actress and at the same time finishing her college degree at the University of Texas. In New York she had recently done a photo shooting with car2go. We spoke about the shooting, her impressions of car2go and with whom she would like to take on a ride. The answer was quite intriguing.

Mrs West, please tell us where you’re from, about your profession and interests?
„I am originally from Columbus, Ohio, however I just moved to Austin, TX from NYC where I was living for the past three years! I work as a professional model and actress, however now that I moved to Austin, my focus has moved to finishing my college degree at the University of Texas. I still model here in Texas, and will continue to commute to and from NYC, if jobs come up. Other interests include exercising (yoga, running, biking), reading, blogging and photography! “

Recently you had done a photo shooting with car2go in New York. Please tell us briefly how it was. And how did the New Yorkers react on the shooting and especially on car2go?
„The car2go shoot in New York took place on an overcast and rainy day, and my key shot was standing outside of a store window under an umbrella, peeking in to the store with the car2go behind me. It was one of the most fun shoots I have done, and I was so excited to have booked the job.
The New Yorkers didn’t act any different while witnessing the photo shoot. I think native New Yorkers are used to that and movie sets taking over their sidewalks by now, it just becomes part of their daily lives! “

What was your first impression of car2go? What’s your opinion about the mobility concept behind car2go?
“Well my Grandfather recently bought a smartcar, and I am all about switching to more fuel efficient cars and helping the environment by lowering fuel emissions, so I am already a big fan of the car2go concept! I can’t wait to see the program catch on in Texas!”

If car2go came to your city, would you use it, on which occasions?
“I would definitely use car2go if and when it comes to my city. I would use it for every day errands and commuting to school!”

Did you already talk to friends and family about the mobility concept car2go? If so, how did they react?
„The people that I have told about car2go think it’s a brilliant idea and are hopeful that it will soon come to their home towns!“

Do you have already any suggestions or is there a special feature you miss and like to have for car2go?
“I would suggest a blackberry (not just iPhone) application for car2go!”

Mobility in general is crucial for such a vast country like the USA. Do you believe the Americans will cherish car2go?
“I hope America will cherish car2go. I think Americans as a whole are finally realizing that our environment and economy are in a critical state, and they will see that a program like car2go will help solve some of these issues.”

Mrs. West, your choice: With whom would you like to ride car2go?
„If I had to choose a celebrity to witness using car2go, I’d have to go with the entire University of Texas football team. I think seeing the big guys zipping around in the little cars would be very entertaining! “

Mrs. West thank you very much for this interview!
„Thank you!“

AROUND CAR2GO

AUSTIN LOOKS TO THE FUTURE: WHY TEXAS METROPOLIS WILL LOVE CAR2GO

Austin, the capital of the State of Texas, is a university town and a city of science - just like Ulm. The fourth-largest metropolis in the "Lone Star State" is liberal, alternative, freedom loving and, above all, environmentally conscious. These are excellent conditions for car2go, and the pilot project is scheduled to make its debut there this fall. Read more about the city on the Colorado River, the people who live there, places of interest, and festivals. And what “Keep Austin weird” means to the city

The City: Waterloo, Austin and the Austinites
Ulm/Austin. The city of Austin was founded in 1835, and was originally called Waterloo before being renamed in 1838 to honor Stephen F. Austin. He was the founder of what was then the independent Republic of Texas. Austin has been the capital of the “Lone Star State” since 1839. Today, the metropolis has about 750,000 inhabitants, who call themselves “Austinites.” A total of about 1.7 million people live in the greater metropolitan area. Of these, 65 percent are white, 31 percent are Hispanic or Latino, and about 10 percent are black or African American. The rest are Asian, Native American or other races. Both the city of Austin and Texas as a whole have a strong Mexican influence. This reveals itself in many ways, including the menus in popular Tex-Mex restaurants. Spanish is not something that just appears off on the margins; there are Spanish radio and TV stations, and signs are often bilingual.

Silicon Hills: Austin is an important technological center
The Austinites are a diverse mix of university professors, students, politicians, musicians, government employees, IT professionals, employees and laborers. At 32, the average age is relatively low, and 55 percent of residents are younger than 35. There are about 50,000 students on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, which makes it one of the largest universities in the United States. It is also considered one of the best public schools in the country. In addition, the city has many smaller private universities, such as Concordia University and Saint Edward's.
Austin’s nickname is “Silicon Hills,” which is no wonder, since many large companies have an office here. For example: Dell Computer, IBM, Wincor Nixdorf, HP and Applied Materials. Over the years the city has become an important center for technology companies. Dell is one of the largest employers, following only the State of Texas and the University of Texas.

Assessment: Environmentally conscious, well-liked and cool
Environmental consciousness is setting the agenda in Austin: By 2020, renewable sources of energy such as wind and solar are expected to meet about one third of the city's needs. This has also been recognized: In a vote for the "Greenest City in America 2009," Austin came in third. The Travel Channel chose the city as the most well-liked by students. And in 2006, Money Magazine ranked Austin second in its listing of cities with the best quality of life. Word must have gotten around that life is good in the beautiful Hill Country with its picturesque lakes, since Austin was also awarded second place for the "coolest people and the best personalities," according to CNN’s travel and leisure magazine. What is it exactly that accounts for the charm and uniqueness of Austin and the Austinites?

Motto: Keep Austin weird
Austin and its residents are open to newness and innovation. And therefore it was more than just empty talk when outgoing mayor Will Wynn said the following in an interview with car2read: “Protecting the environment is a true concern for the people of Austin. And car2go is the perfect mobility concept! Therefore I am also very proud that we have been chosen as the first international partner. car2go has my full support."
In addition to a spirit of innovation, there is another spirit that also has a strong presence in Austin, and its motto can be seen printed on almost every souvenir and t-shirt: “Keep Austin weird” (which means roughly: "Make sure that Austin stays crazy” or “Keep Austin strange”). Basically, Austinites are proud to be unusual and diverse and not to conform to the cliche of the typical Texan. Instead, they're weird http://www.keepaustinweird.com/. This is also the credo of the locals and of independent businesses. They don’t want to be like the large chains and supermarkets that make many US cities so banal and indistinguishable from one another. On South Congress Avenue there are now many small shops that stay open extra late every first Thursday of the month. There is also art and live music along the length of the street: www.firstthursday.info/. Incidentally, Austin is the only city in the United States where there is no law that prevents women from going topless.

Music City: Austin rocks!
Don’t forget: Music! Here Austin is well ahead of the pack. First, in March of every year there is the “South by Southwest Festival” (SXSW, www.sxsw.com). The festival draws people from all over the world and is America's largest musical exhibition for rock, folk, pop and country, with over 1000 bands performing at 60 different venues around Austin. About 1600 media representative come to SXSW every year, and many musicians have already been discovered here. (Source: Study projektzukunft.berlin.de).
In addition to the festival, there are almost 200 venues where both Austinites and visitors can experience live music year round. Just as renowned as the SXSW is the Austin City Limits Music Festival, where over 100 bands perform. This year the festival will be held at the beginning of October, and it will feature the following musicians (among others): Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, Thievery Corporation, Phoenix, Mos Def, the legendary Sonic Youth and cult favorites The B-52s. For more information: http://2009.aclfestival.com. In the Sixth Street entertainment district and on other nearby crossroads, there are hundreds of clubs where bands often play for tips. And some of the best musicians regularly make a stop at Antone’s blues club. For more information: http://www.antones.net.

Architecture: Hot Spots in Austin
One tourist attraction is the Texas State Capitol, the seat of government for the State of Texas. The building, which was designed by Elijah E. Myers, was completed in 1885 and is considered an architectural highlight. At the time of its construction it was the seventh-tallest building in the world. In Austin there are few high buildings in general. This is the result of a special directive according to which the view of the capitol building was to remain unobstructed from anywhere in Austin. And thus the residential high-rise 360 Condominiums and the Frost Bank Tower are no higher than 172 and 157 meters tall, respectively. The tower was the first high-rise to be built after the attacks on September 11th. The Austin Chronicle has expressed the opinion that the building is doing its part to keep Austin “characteristically weird.”

Another hotspot is the Harry Ransom Center. The library and archive hosts an original manuscript by Ernest Hemingway and a copy of the Gutenberg Bible. Not to mention 36 million other rare manuscripts, 1 million rare books and 5 million photos. Art exhibitions are also held here regularly, but the most striking thing about the center is its extraordinary architecture.

Nature: Enchanted by bats and the Hill Country
During the summer months, an impressive natural spectacle takes place on Congress Bridge. About 1.5 million bats prepare themselves to hunt insects and then rise into the air. The colony is the largest urban bat population in the world. Thousands of spectators gather at the appropriate time every day to watch this event.
If you’re looking for a place to relax, you can visit Zilker Metropolitan Park, a green oasis in the heart of South Austin. With an area of 350 acres (142 hectares) the park is a great place for walking, hiking, biking or for a nice picnic. Anyone who likes kites will enjoy the Zilker Park Kite Festival. The park is also where the aforementioned Austin City Limits Music Festival is held. The highlands surrounding Austin, called Hill Country, also have a lot to offer. The Wild West beckons with operating ranches in Mountain Home, Sonara and Bandera, while Fredericksburg features rustic breakfast pensions, wine bars and boutiques. Every year, New Braunfels celebrates its famous “Wurstfest”, while the German town Gruene is home to the oldest known dance hall in Texas.

Daughters and sons of the city
Many people from Austin have become famous, including film and music stars. To name just a few: The actor and wrestler Steve Austin (true to his name); Carly Fiorina, the CEO of HP from 1999 to 2005; fashion designer Tom Ford; actor and writer Ethan Hawke; the rapper Nelly; and Christian Waldvogel (www.waldvogel.com), a Swiss artist who was actually born in Austin.

Austin allows people to live comfortably and, first and foremost, without being bothered, which is why it is appreciated by many American actors. Sandra Bullock, who is of German descent, lives here with her husband and her children, free from the usual Hollywood stress. In November 2006 she finally realized her dream of opening a restaurant in Austin, which is called Bess (www.bessbistro.com). The menu features Brussels sprouts and spaetzle – Sandra Bullock loves German food and is nostalgic for it.
Cult director Quentin Tarantino is another celebrity who can often be seem in Austin. He is always around when exceptional films are being shown at Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas (www.drafthouse.com).
